How to make your dull product feel interesting
Not all businesses are created equal. Some are interesting and cool while others are boring and dull. That is the nature of the universe. Small business owners with a perceived dull product or service seem to struggle when it comes to creating interesting promotional content and eliciting engagement on social media. In this post, let us look at how 5 strategies can help address the issue.
Bring humor into it!
To create engagement and make a product interesting, humor can go a long way. If you can find anything that you can make fun of in your product or service, then use that to create interesting and funny marketing copy, advert, slogan or banner. Do not be afraid to poke fun at your product – if it warrants it. Check out this video with some funny adverts for some boring and some not-so-boring products.
Create a whacky tone!
Try and create a whacky tone of voice in your product copy, images, posts, social media updates or video adverts. This whacky tone can take the form of the language being used, the character telling the story or the context, props or environment. This advert by Loctite turns a boring gap filler into a fun and whacky product – giving it a personality and tone that aligns with their brand identity.
Use the shock factor
With in reason, you can also go for the shock factor to engage the audience. This could be a little tricky but with creative thought and some quality control your message can become quite powerful. Watch this advert by St. John Ambulance in London to see who the shock factor really sends chills down your spine and delivers the message in a powerful way. What do you feel by the end of the advert?
Make it super fun!
Airline safety videos are boring – to say the least. Virgin airlines create a super fun advert with dancing stars, an awesome soundtrack, and loads of fun! This video went viral and garnered never-before-seen engagement. Virgin also went back to its roots by using music to tell what would have been considered a boring story. Watch this video and enjoy the ride!
Create emotional connections
A message, advert or promotional copy with an emotional and positive connections can turn a boring or unconventional product or service into an appealing one. Watch this advert in which Beldent created a unique experiment that showcases their product with out being in your face and would make you smile at the end of it.
As you see from the above adverts, communicating your message in a creative way and pushing the envelope will increase engagement and take your brand from being boring and me-too to being fun, interesting and appealing. Your fist reaction might be to say that these brands are all huge and have the money and teams to create these creative adverts. I get that. I referenced them here to inspire you. Not to say that you need to create adverts that cost hundreds of thousands. These adverts show you how thinking outside the box can create impact. You can do that same in a small way or a big way depending on how inspired you are.

"Working with the team at Spellbrand has been fantastic! I spent time researching companies that would help me build brands for each asset that are all in different locations and more specifically build a brand that could help tell each of their unique stories. Spellbrand did just that. The process was easy. To provide them with my initial thoughts through a nicely-outlined input form they sent to me and they took that information and created a number of awesome designs. I was able to incorporate "the story" easily with a design we selected. I'm excited to get it into action and see what's in store for the next project. Also, each person I worked with has been super responsive, knowledgeable, and awesome to work with! Kudos to Mash, Mike, and Eva! I really enjoy working with you!"

"We tried several designers to design our logo and could not find the one that fit our company. After a few years of searching for a good branding company, I found Spellbrand through a random search. Spellbrand was sensational! They took the time to listen to our story and created a few designs that spoke to our team and what we do. We've never had a designer do that. We not only received a great logo, but we now have a brand we are all proud to wear! Thank you!"
